Florence as the Capital of Mayors from All Over the World: Palazzo dei Congressi, December 10-11, 2011
05 December 2011

Environment, development, innovation, peace and International cooperation, but also culture, town planning, climate changes. These are just some of the topics which are going to be discussed at the UCLG World Council 2011 (United Cities and Local Governments), an event that will bring over 400 Mayors from all over the world in Florence.

The organizers are hoping that this event will be as successful as the meeting organized in 1955 by the then Mayor of Florence Giorgio La Pira. Back then, La Pira welcomed in Florence an incredible number of  Italian and International municipal representatives coming from many different cities in the world for the first time. “Giorgio La Pira – says  Matteo Renzi, Mayor of Florence -  governed Florence by mixing the local needs with International ambitions. In his view, cities had a soul and a role to play. This event should be interpreted in this sense. 50 years after, we believe that Florence can once again host  an important meeting, combining a global dimension with a debate on everyday problems”.

The ANCI (The National Association of Italian Municipalities) Council will also take place at the same time.

Italian Mayors Piero Fassino (Mayor of Turin), Graziano Delrio (Mayor of Reggio Emilia and President of the ANCI association) and Gianni Alemanno (Mayor of Rome) are expected to attend the event, along with the Mayors of Paris, Lisbon, Istanbul, Barcelona, Nairobi, Philadelphia, Guangzhou, and many others.
